ICSI

INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

In the event of male infertility (too few sperm cells, low sperm motility or abnormal shape) sperm cells can be directly injected into the cytoplasm of the ovum. Such micro-manipulative procedure is called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). In case of azoospermia (no sperm cells in semen) it is possible to retrieve sperm from testicles or epididymis. Sperm retrieved from testicle is immobile but still potent in case of ICSI procedure. During ICSI 70% of ova are fertilised. Fertilised ova are grown in test tube for two days, thereafter, 1-2 embryos are transferred in the uterus.
